The confusion around Pena Palace tickets is not about price — it is that the official names do not describe what they do. "Essential Visit" and "Complete Visit" cost €20 and €45, and the difference between them is not the park: it is how many rooms open on the interior circuit.

There are two routes and both are legitimate. The choice is between price and flexibility.
Parques de Sintra names Blueticket, Tiqets, Headout and GetYourGuide as ticketing partners. They cost more than the official table, but:
The practical rule: if you know the exact date and time and want the minimum price, buy official. If you are still assembling the day, or want two monuments in one payment, a reseller solves it.
Pena is one of the most heavily intermediated monuments in Europe. Three signs you are in the wrong place:

Tuesday to Thursday is always better. Avoid weekends and Portuguese public holidays between May and September.
Add up the train, the 434 queue and the 30-minute climb. Leaving Lisbon at 08:30, an 11:00 slot is comfortable; 10:00 is tight.
Ages 6–17 and over-65s pay less. Two children plus two adults almost always come out ahead on the family rate.

For most visitors, the €20 Essential Visit: it covers the whole park, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the main palace circuit. Stepping up to the €45 Complete Visit only pays if you have a free day and a real interest in the extra rooms.
You can, if slots are free — and in high season they often are not, particularly in the morning. October to April, same-day usually works. May to September, plan two to seven days ahead.
No. They are separate monuments with separate tickets, even though Parques de Sintra runs both. Resellers do sell combination tickets covering the two.
In July and August, at weekends or on a public holiday, yes: only 25 places are released per slot and it clears both queues. On a January weekday it is money wasted — the standard queue takes minutes.
The official timed ticket is neither changed nor refunded if you fail to show up. Some reseller products carry their own cancellation policy — check the product page before you pay.
