Sintra has two bus routes serving two different axes, and a park with two gates. Understanding that at the start of the day saves two hours of unnecessary climbing.

The layout in thirty seconds

Two facts explain almost all of Sintra's logistics: route 434 climbs the hills (Moorish Castle and Pena Palace) and route 435 runs through the town (Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais, Monserrate). They do not meet partway.

The two gates of Pena Park

This is the fact most missing from tourist maps. The park has two entrances and the choice changes your day:

  • Main Gate (Estrada da Pena). Where the 434 stops and where the main ticket desk is. Also where the queues form. From here the climb to the palace takes about 30 minutes.
  • Lakes Gate. Far calmer. It sits on the Valley of the Lakes side, near the Chalet of the Countess of Edla. The climb to the palace is longer, but the path is beautiful and empty. It is the best exit if you finish at the Chalet.

The strategy that works: in through the Main Gate, out through the Lakes Gate. Do the palace first, come down through the park and leave on the other side without retracing a step.

Official and offline maps

Ask for the paper park map at the ticket desk: signage inside Pena Park is discreet, and several secondary paths are not marked on the ground at all.

Download the area for offline use in whichever maps app you use. Mobile coverage drops out at several points in the hills, particularly in the Valley of the Lakes and on the way to Cruz Alta.

Frequently asked questions

How many entrances does Pena Park have?

Two: the Main Gate on Estrada da Pena, where bus 434 stops, and the quieter Lakes Gate on the Valley of the Lakes side, near the Chalet of the Countess of Edla.

How far is Pena Palace from the Moorish Castle?

About ten minutes on foot along the road, downhill going from Pena to the castle. Bus 434 also covers it, with one stop between the two.

Which bus goes to which monument?

The 434 climbs the hills and serves the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. The 435 runs through the town and serves Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais and Monserrate. They are separate axes.

Can you walk from the town to Pena Palace?

You can: about 40 minutes on a forest path to the gate, climbing 200 metres, plus another 30 minutes inside the park to the palace.

Is there mobile coverage in Pena Park?

Patchy. It drops out mainly in the Valley of the Lakes and on the paths to Cruz Alta. Download tickets and maps before you go up.
