Moorish Castle: tickets, hours and the view over Pena

The Moorish Castle is the oldest structure in the Sintra hills and the only one not built to impress. Muslim forces raised it around the 10th century as a military position controlling the coastline and the valley, and it passed into Christian hands in 1147 when Afonso Henriques took Lisbon.

Unlike Pena, there are no interiors here, no furniture, no collections. There is wall — roughly half a kilometre of rampart walk rising and falling along the ridge, with towers at the high points. It is a physical visit, and that is the experience.

Why it is the best companion to Pena

The view Pena cannot give you

From the top of the ramparts you see the whole of Pena Palace, in colour, on its crag — the framing that appears in every photograph and that you cannot get from inside the palace itself. Only Cruz Alta, inside Pena Park, offers anything comparable.

The logistics

They sit on the same road, about ten minutes apart on foot, and bus 434 stops at both. You do not have to drop back down to the town in between — the only Sintra pairing that avoids it.

The right order

Pena first, castle second. Pena runs on timed entry and fills from 11:00; the castle has no slots, and the afternoon light is better for photographing the palace from the walls. Reverse it and you risk arriving late for your slot.

What you see inside the grounds

• The rampart walk. The full circuit along the walls, climbing and dropping constantly. About 45 minutes at an unhurried pace.
• The Royal Tower. The high point at 412 metres, with the 360-degree view over the hills, the valley and the Atlantic.
• The cistern. The medieval water reservoir cut into the rock, which made it possible to hold out under siege.
• The ruins of St Peter’s church. A 12th-century Romanesque building, put up after the Christian conquest.
• The medieval Christian necropolis. Graves cut into the rock beside the church.
• The interpretation centre. A small exhibition on the archaeological excavations, next to the entrance.
