Pena Palace opening hours look simple until you realise three clocks are running at once: the park's, the palace's and your ticket's. Confusing them is the single most common reason people reach the top of the hill and do not get in.

How the timed entry actually works

When you buy a ticket that includes the interior, you pick a date and a time. That time is when you must be standing at the door of the museum circuit, already at the top — not at the park entrance.

The three rules Parques de Sintra spells out

  • There is no tolerance for late arrival. Miss the stated time and you do not go in.
  • The ticket is neither changed nor refunded if you fail to show up for your slot.
  • Allow 30 minutes between the park entrance and the interior entrance. It is a climb, with real elevation.

Choosing the right time

Work backwards from the slot:

  • −30 min: through the park gate.
  • −45 to −60 min: off the 434 bus (in August, add the station queue).
  • −1h30 to −2h: on the train in Lisbon.

An 11:00 slot means leaving Rossio around 09:00. A 09:30 slot — the first of the day — means the 07:30 train and is the hardest to hit, though it is the best one for crowds.

Summer and winter hours

Unlike many Portuguese monuments, Pena keeps the same grid all year — what changes dramatically is the light and the crowds. In December it is dark in the hills by 17:00 and the park, which closes at 19:00, empties long before that. In June there is still sun at 19:00.

What that means in practice

  • Summer (May to September): morning slots sell out days ahead. Afternoons have more availability, and from 16:30 the monument calms down considerably.
  • Winter (November to March): slots are almost always available, often same-day. In exchange, thick fog is a real possibility and the park loses much of its appeal in rain.
  • Shoulder season (April, October): the best compromise. Good light, manageable crowds, comfortable temperatures for the walk up.

Closing days

The monument closes on 1 January and 25 December. One-off closures happen for building work, severe weather or events — the hills get episodes of strong wind that force parts of the park to shut. If a storm is forecast, check the official site the day before.

Opening hours of the other Sintra monuments

If you are building a two-monument day, these are the hours that matter. Note that the Convent of the Capuchos closes at 17:30 and the Moorish Castle at 18:00 — both before Pena Park.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Pena Palace open?

The park opens at 09:00 and the palace interior circuit at 09:30. The last palace ticket is sold at 17:30 and last admission is 18:00.

What time does Pena Palace close?

The palace closes at 18:30 and the park at 19:00. The Chalet of the Countess of Edla closes earlier, at 17:30, with last entry at 17:00.

Is the time on my ticket the time I enter the park?

No. It is the time you enter the palace interior circuit. From the park gate that is about a 30-minute climb, and the climb is on your own time.

What happens if I miss my slot?

You do not get into the interior. Parques de Sintra states there is no tolerance for late arrival and that tickets are not changed or refunded for a no-show. A park ticket still lets you walk the gardens.

Is Pena Palace open on Sundays?

It opens every day of the week, weekends included, on the same hours. It closes on 1 January and 25 December. Sunday is, however, the busiest day.

What is the best time of day to visit?

The first slot, between 09:30 and 10:30, or after 16:30. Between 11:00 and 15:00 the day trips out of Lisbon all arrive at once.

Do the opening hours change in summer?

The official grid stays the same year-round. What changes is demand and daylight: in July and August the morning slots sell out days ahead.
